Vernon a une origine très ancienne attestée par des vestiges préhistoriques, celtiques, gallo-romains, mérovingiens. Elle devient, comme Gisors, une ville militaire importante après la constitution du Duché de Normandie. Richard de Reviers, Capitaine de Vernon, participa à la bataille d'Hastings, en 1066, et fit souche en Angleterre.
